Customer Reference Programs: What Are They?

You’d think, in business, having a great product insures success. The perfect product isn’t always what leads to success. It’s about having perfect customers. And while those “perfect customers” are few and far between, making sure you keep the ones you’ve got and develop more of them out of the customers you have is where your real success is going to come from. Having a way to figure out which ones need work is where a great customer reference program comes into play.

 

All too often, we wait for customers to contact us, basically playing Hobson’s choice when it comes to who we talk to. Either do without, or take who calls. By using customer reference tools, we can be proactive in our approach. We can target our sales techniques to the customers because we can see what customers are needing. CRP’s, especially good ones, enables us to make notes, gauge future needs and schedule calls. It can even help us keep track of our customer’s life-events like birthdays, kids, and even pets and hobbies which can be an effective tool.

 

Let’s face it, when it comes to having a ‘perfect customer’ it means we have to be a ‘perfect vendor’. Not only do we have to meet and even exceed their needs, but we have to do so in such a way as they want even more from us as the process goes on. Having information about them and being able to anticipate their wants and needs based off of that information will enable us to be that ‘perfect vendor’. Whether your customers realize it or not, when we can do this for them, they do become our ‘perfect customer’.

 

All of this ability comes down to our ability to interface with our customers in personal ways. Having a powerful, flexible customer reference program enables us to keep track of all kinds of details on all our customers. The key to having a successful business is a great customer database. The product almost doesn’t matter.
