How The Packaging Industry Is Helping Preserve Our World
January 26th, 2011 by admin

We have witnessed constant efforts started by different sectors of the society to contribute to the call to save planet earth from further degradation. Both private and non private institutions throughout the world have started employing ways to save our planet. Different sectors of the society around the world have responded to the call to save our planet from further destruction. The packaging industry is one such sector that is working out changes into its systems and operations with the hope of contributing to the rescue of the world. Although it may take very long years before most of the businesses may heed to these initiatives, gradually, the developments are making a positive change.

Although it used to be just function and appearance in focus when designing a product’s packaging, now the types of materials and procedures are investigated with much interest about how ecological sustainability could be adopted with every packing material. ‘Green’ efforts are continuously being utilized in retail packaging products not only for the sake of it, but in addition to impart to the consumers the value of having a share in this noble campaign.

A number of the measures that have to date been applied by the packaging industry to make eco-friendly products include the usage of biodegradable plastics made from several plants and the use of commercialized biomaterials which also enhance the barrier characteristics of the packaging materials. Many other materials being utilized that are deemed to be sustainable and biodegradable are: corn, soya, cotton, organic bamboo, clamshells and unbleached paper.

Furthermore, manufacturers of retail packaging have come up with products that will make sure that a consumer can recycle the packaging after the contents have been used. Recycling is reinforced so that these packaging items aren’t tossed up into the garbage bins but are put to other constructive uses. Recyclable materials and reusable products include cardboard papers, corrugated paper and glass bottles. Energy efficiency can also be worked out by the reduction in packaging processes and systems and in manufacturing and distribution. The use of plastic instead of glass bottles, for example can lower carbon production in shipping since it is a lighter product.

The ‘greening’ trend in this industry is expected to keep on in the future years. It is predicted that a growing number of eco-friendly products are going to be introduced in the market, as more and more eco-friendly systems are being created. As such companies are noticing that their operations must be more beneficial to our environment not just to protect the environment but it’s the trend that’s seen to be dominating the industry’s future. Therefore it makes a lot of business sense to start caring for the planet if you would like be cared for by your buyers in the future.
