The story line begins in the world of Vana’diel.  Vana’diel is on the cusp of war.  Your character is one of the free roaming adventurers that help fight against the beast men that are spread throughout the four nations.  Your character can be any of the five races offered:  Hume, Elvaan, Tarutaru, Mithra, or Galka.  You can choose one of six jobs for the character you are creating:  warrior, thief, monk, white mage, black mage, or red mage.  These aren’t the only jobs to choose from, but rather the six initial jobs.  On top of this, you get to customize your character by choosing gender, face and body size.  The combinations are never ending. 

One neat thing is that you can change jobs.  Even better is when you can perform two jobs at once.  This is called a support job.  For instance you could be a monk that can perform white magic.  This allows you to gain experience and money at an increased rate.  By performing quests, you might not gain a lot of money, but your character gains respect and trust.  This might sound odd, but you’ll need the trust and respect to do certain missions that your nation asks of you.  The greater the mission, the more respect and trust you must have.  This leads to conquests, which are the conquering of other regions.  You fight beast men/monsters for the honor of your nation.
